For a long time, designers have used the same metal finishes in kitchens and bathrooms. This concept is no longer the norm as more spaces are being decorated with multiple finishes in the same room.
Using Multiple Finishes in Kitchens and Bathrooms
Though you can mix finishes, you have to start with a dominant metal. Consider what is in the kitchen or bathroom. In a kitchen that contains black cabinets, polished brass makes a statement. In a bathroom with white and grey tiles, polished chrome keeps the area light.
After you choose your dominant metal, select one or two accent metals to create contrast.
Too many additional finishes can make a room look busy. Choose warm or cool tones such as polished brass with brushed chrome or silver in the bathroom. Polished copper is an excellent contrast to brushed nickel or stainless steel in the kitchen. If the room is large enough, you can add a neutral color like black to break up the tones.
Creating Harmony with Metallics in Kitchens and Bathrooms
Without effective design, combining metal finishes can look busy or unintentionally eclectic. Use height to break up the metals. For instance, in a bathroom with chrome faucets, towel bars, and shower fixtures, use brushed brass or black finishes for matching framed mirrors and lights.
Use your dominant metal more than the accent. You can also use matte or hammered finishes to distinguish them from polished ones.
If you doubt the use of mixed metals in a room, start with small pieces that can be swapped out, such as a mirror or wall art. Keep your mixture to two rather than three finishes. Once you see that the mixture blends well in the room, you can add more permanent fixtures such as lighting, faucets, or cabinet hardware.
