As a designer, a backsplash in the kitchen which compliments the countertop is a very important design element. If the countertop is a solid color like white or black, then the backsplash can bring in multiple colors to match the surroundings or a white/black pattern. The material used for most backsplashes is either a porcelain or glass tile.
Backsplashes in the Kitchen
Porcelain tiles come in many patterns such as hexagon, argyle or baroque mosaic dimensional geometrics, or they can be installed in a subway or herringbone pattern. Glass tiles can have a mix of stone or granite and can be installed horizontally or vertically. To give a more rustic look, a stacked stone tile can be used. Mirror backsplashes reflect the countertop and surrounding area.
Over the cooktop or the range the material used should be heat resistant. For example, if you are using a mirror or vinyl backsplash use a stainless material to match your appliances or a piece of your countertop.
Wilsonart has just introduced an acrylic collection featuring a mixture of on-trend artistic and traditional patterns with an easy and quick installation process. The designs from abstract, geometric and the classic subway tiles are fresh and timeless. However the material is not suitable to install behind your gas cooktop or gas range.
Bathroom Backsplashes
A backsplash can be installed behind the bathroom vanity or on all three sides of the vanity to introduce a design or bring in color. It can also be a carry over of a design used in the shower or tub area. This design pulls the bathroom together in a unique way.
Installing a backsplash or refreshing a backsplash is a great way to update a kitchen or bathroom. There are many colors, though grey and white appear to be the most popular, and there are many patterns to choose from.
